Hot coffee, fritter, and the hustle of a coffee shop usually complement the atmosphere of informal discussions which are held at least once a week. Sometimes it’s more formal, with a large meeting table, presentation screen, and those with ties.
But all of that is now gone.
Currently, I’m learning to enjoy many discussions from the monitor screen only. Sometimes because the quality of the internet is still limited, there must be a lot of compromises. I have to learn to enjoy a “freeze” screen, sound that is lost many times, or a sudden alone discussion because I lost connection. A compromise process that drains quite a lot of energy (BBC: Why zoom video chats are so exhausting).
Whether we realize it or not, we may have just arrived at the initial stage of a series of major changes (McKinsey article). An era of disruption is present endlessly. We are facing a new landscape, a new normal, and for that, we need a new point of view. We must be able to see things from a new perspective. Because only then will we be able to learn, unlearn, and relearn with enough speed to balance all changes.
When we talk about leadership, it also good for us to also discuss about followership. When we talk about results, it will be better to also discuss the process. When we talk about effective learning approaches, it might also help to discuss fun learning approaches (Paper: Foundation of Game Based Learning).
Maybe what we really need right now is a shared learning room. For us to share perspectives on many things. To remind each other that there is always a new approach we might try. To strengthen each other so that we can enjoy every change that occurs.
