Nowadays, game has become almost everyone’s need. People love gaming and have their own game preferences.
Another fact in the industry now is that people also are willing to spend money on game, game that they love. But how if a paid game becomes free? Gamer becomes engaged, though the game may not in their preferences.This behavior then opens up an opportunity. Though nothing comes absolutely free, you could design it as such. With a gamification model, the free paid-game then is used to accommodate data collecting.
Game company needs data, so data collecting through free game giveaway seems as much beneficial. The giveaway also can be used to increase the brand awareness of the company or the game itself, through word of mouth or social media virality. But to be remember, find the right method to distribute the giveaway.As such, media becomes the right channel to spread the giveaway news and data collecting. Kids don’t stop being kids just because they are sick and have to stay in hospital. Like other kids, kids patient also need to play. Play is the main business of kids lives. It’s not only fun, play promotes relaxation, learning, development, socialization etc.
Hospitalization can be very frightening for kids. It is important that their emotional and psychological needs are cared for. The most effective way to deal with these condition, are the presence of their parent and playing. Being able to play while kids are in hospital has a lot of advantages. Kids can express their feelings and worries about treatments, and helping them to feel less anxious.
Now, many researchers have designed games that are used to help kids control and manage their health conditions. In US, researchers are developing an electronic game specifically designed for children with cancer that empowers them to use their minds and bodies to fight their disease. Popular games such as Wii Fit also is being used to help overweight children at risk of diabetes up and lose weight. And many more.
Maybe it’s also our job as game designer to make games that can be used for kids patient.
Some people may not really know what Game Publisher do when the Game Developer makes a game. Game Publisher is the one who will bring the game to the market. Game Publisher is the one who will introduce your game into public.
Let’s say a big company like Square Enix (called Square Company, Limited back then). What is your first thought when you heard about Square Enix? I bet many will say “A company who develop Final Fantasy Series”. Yes, it is true, but there’s something more. There must be some great ‘key’ beyond the successful history of Final Fantasy. So, what do you think, what makes final fantasy a great game. The graphic? Not Really. The first series of First Final Fantasy was realeased NES in 1987 . The Story? The Gameplay? Yes. These are the some success key of Final Fantasy back than. Then you can give a conclusion, Square, Ltd was doing such a great thing by developed and made Final Fantasy series. But again, there is more. So how come Final Fantasy could be sold more than two million copies worldwide on 2003. You still think it because of the story and gameplay of Final Fantasy itself? If you think so, then you must be seen Square, Ltd only as a developer. You forget, or may you do not know that Square, Ltd is also a publisher.
Let’s make this clear. How could Final Fantasy sold in all over the world. Is there any regulation so Final Fantasy could enter the global market so freely? That’s is not possible without a help of Publisher. While the game was being developed, the publisher did the market research. Remember, the first Final Fantasy was the last project of Square, Ltd because they were in a ditch position and they gambled their last project. And marvelously they made it into the market. Yes, they gambled but not without a research.
The publisher also made a strategy to bring the game go global, worldwide. Made a teaser, trailer to attract the audiences or consumers and promote the game. Publisher needs to see what the market want and need. If publisher can forecasting that, the developer who works together with the publisher will lead the market.
Making a good game is not enough and it will never make to the market without a help from publisher.
Indonesian families are invited to design a game each month and play it together with the whole family. This program aims to motivate all Indonesian families to bring back culture of playing together (game session) with family and build a strong family bonding through the game.
The art of making a product is far different from selling it. While it is true the two processes are connected to each others and cannot be separated, most game developers will find it hard to penetrate the market. Solutions in the area are there, yet which one is the easiest one, giving the most significant impact compared to the effort and cost?
Selling is not always about money, but also awareness. But whether it is about money or awareness, a game must first be delivered to the users. You can find many reading materials on what psychology factor that affect user to purchase a game or hire a service, but that is not what I will talk about. How the users find your game: product discovery system, featured product (for which you have to pay), affiliation system, or else? There is one simple easy way to reach your audience with minimum effort, that is to write.

One of unique things that game offers to players is to be the true self, or completely another. We may often experience a shy person play as an ambitious player, timid person as aggressive person, or careful person who often play a risky game. It is because people tend to consider game as another world that is unreal, or to put it simply a simulation. And so, they consider playing game as a chance to explore new things as they face challenges.
It is true that in game, players need not to worry for doing mistakes – as they always have limitless chance. It then motivates them to do better and better, to go beyond the boundary. Unconservative improvement is the key in the process.
So how can this impact also implemented not only in games, but also in real life? Unfortunately, the most important factor in game is also the missing fator in real life, which is the limitless chance. It is, in my opinion, the most challenging task of game designers as to make serious game and gamification. Well, may be that is why it is called serious. Game designers have to find other factor(s) that compensates this missing factor, and it may be vary. One the easiest method to define this factor is to understand the characteristics of players.

One of the most appealing features of board games media for me, is the possibility for players to alter the rules according to their own preferences and agreement (between players). This is something not so many other media of games can provide. In the context of video games, the rules or mechanics are usually determined and unchangeable. Some have tried to incorporate different responses from the environment according to the player’s actions, giving birth to decision making role playing games, while others make a more open and free mechanism resulting in what we call sandbox games. But still, players are limited to get pre-programmed outcomes (even when it’s unexpected). There are laws and constraints that cannot be tresspassed by the players.
The thing about board game or any conventional games, is that the rules are not directly incorporated in the game itself, but instead get created, agreed upon by the players , and then applied voluntarily. Some of us may have the experience when we decide to play board game not strictly according to the rulebook but making our own rules as a way to make the game more interesting. It said that first impression is everything. First few minutes we are talking with stranger will determine whether we will agree to trust him to be our friend, or just someone you know. First few minutes attending a seminar or class will tell you whether or not you will sleep during the process. The first moment you see a board game at the store also is the most crucial moment in your life to decide if you want to love it, or simply set your eyes upon any other games. Even tough many people still choose to believe “love at first sight” is just a myth, I truly believe, that is only a result of bad first impression.
Don’t judge a book by its cover! Yes, that maybe true, except that a great book’s cover will definitely tease you to open it and learn to love the content. Same thing with a board game. It is certainly important to provide the best game play you can ever think of when you try to design one. But the visualization aspect talks a lot, and by a lot. I mean almost everything, to your customer, the characters, the fonts, the selection of color, the illustration and even the quality of your packaging are the most front line marketers for your products. They are the only spells that can make your game stands out among the other.
How do you know what kind of visualization will help you to create the perfect first impression to everyone? The answer is, there isn’t any first impression that perfect to everyone. Know your product well, but know your target better. Impress them well by making your product looks specifically designed for them, make them feel special. Then they will love you at the first sight.
One of the biggest challenge in introducing board games is about how to explain the rules in the simplest way yet interesting. Some board games make you scared just by looking at the pile of components and a few sheets of rules. Even though not everybody feel the same way (I know some people who gets excited by thick rulebooks and complex gameplay), it’s definitely not easy to introduce board games to those who never played it before.
The rules of a board game is usually compiled in a rulebook/rulesheet, and by a few experience that we had, not so many people are eager enough to read anything before playing. It’s preferable to get the rules explained by a coach. Why are we so lazy to read, even when we know that it’s important? Not just in a board game, some people are even skipping any tutorial provided in digital games when it includes some text to read.
We are born lazy. As a baby we cry to get food, it’s probably unfair to say that babies are lazy, but the problem is that the attitude of a baby are sometimes brought along as we get older. We tend to wait for signs, permission or got told to do anything, instead of looking for clues, asking, or learning. We (most people who get the chance to read this article) live in a world where mankind is no longer striving for survival, in a situation where the civilizations around us are always ready to feed us even if we do nothing.
The thing about game is that it’s usually built on its own universe, having a set of rules separated from the real world, and so reading the rules became essential, the more you understand the rules the more you get engaged in this universe, and yet some people just don’t care and prefer to ask for an easy explanation. Isn’t that the same thing in real life? To survive you don’t really need to read, but to live and get engaged with life it’s a gift to be able to read, one that should never be taken for granted.
Most people are seeing game in narrow point of view. They associated game heavily with digital game, table top game, or sport. There is nothing wrong with that, but I think it is much more fun if we are able to see game in much broader sense because nevertheless we are playing “real life game” everyday.
Basically we can see game as any structured activity that involves interaction between player(s), goal of the game, and the game rule. From here, we can see many things as a game – those who learn economics and game theory will share the same point of view. But there is significant different between “game” and “real life game”, it is our participation. No one really pushing us to play any game, we voluntary play the game and we passionate about it. Because we enjoy it, it motivates us to give our best. The situation is different with most of our “real life game”. Some of us are forced to join the game and because of that, it’s hard to really enjoy the game – and even harder to give our best.
To be able to voluntary participate in a game – we should know what kind of game that we like, that we truly want to play. The same situation applies in our daily life – we just need to find our passion. Passion is the fuel, the energy, and the coin for our real life game. Once we have it – we can enjoy the game, find the best of it, and record a high “happiness” score in our life.
